Crusader Kings III: Silk & Silver turns medieval merchants into power brokers

Who needs a crown when you can own the trade routes? Your wallet may be mightier than any sword.

Who says you need an army to rule the Middle Ages? Sometimes all it takes is a well-placed caravan, a friendly loan and a rival who owes you more than he can ever repay.

That's the pitch behind Crusader Kings III: Silk & Silver, a major expansion for Paradox Interactive's medieval grand strategy role-playing game. It adds trade and playable Republic governments, and it arrives November 17.

Be a landless merchant family

Silk & Silver lets you lead a landless merchant family instead of a throne-sitting dynasty. You establish trade routes for more than 40 goods and grow a trading company along one of three specialties: Caravaneer, Creditor or Artisan.

Money buys more than spices. Merchants can seek patrons, secure exclusive trading rights, improve their company headquarters and use all that wealth to influence rulers.

Republics get a seat at the table

The expansion also makes Republic governments playable. Patrician families compete for the position of doge, propose laws through assemblies, establish foreign trade posts and form Trade Leagues with other Republics.

Two new bookmarks set the stage: medieval trade networks in 1066, and the conflict between the Guelphs and Ghibellines in 1178.
