No Cross-Platform Play in Destiny to Avoid Balance Issues
Bungie has spoken out about why cross-platform play isn’t happening for Destiny.
The decision to not let previous generation and current generation players play its shooter MMO together was due to the unfair advantage it would grant players on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One.
Speaking to Digital Trends, Bungie engineer Roger Wolfson gave the following quote regarding cross-platform play, and why we won’t be seeing it:
“I’ll speak for the hypothetical player,” Wolfson explains. “I have a disadvantage sniping across the map because [my opponent with a next-gen console] is only two pixels on my screen and I’m four pixels on his. You see that in the world of PC gaming, where people are always racing to the best video card to give themselves the advantage.”
“Regardless of where the reality is, there’s definitely a perception among gamers that better hardware means you have an advantage. We don’t want to have to enter that fray, so to create the best, most level playing field, both actually and perceptually, we separated it by platform.”
Destiny’s beta launched yesterday on PlayStation consoles, and will launch on Xbox consoles on July 23rd.
Bungie recently revealed the game’s multiple collector’s editions, one of which will come with a replica of one of the game’s characters called Ghost, who is voiced by Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage.
Destiny is slated for release on September 9th for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One and and Xbox 360.
