After announcing Command & Conquer: Generals 2 in 2011 and then quietly shuttering it years later, they are bringing the franchise back as a competitive multiplayer RTS on mobile with Command & Conquer: Rivals. It is a 1v1 multiplayer game that will involve “collecting, customizing, and upgrading a vast array of units and forces from the iconic Command & Conquer series.”
While they didn’t give much in the way of details on release or pricing, they did say that Android users can pre-register for information pertaining to release while Android users in the U.S. and Canada can pre-register to play in the alpha of the game if they are so inclined. Being able to collect and customize your army makes it sound like it will have plenty of free-to-play hooks, so I’d expect they go that route, but we’ll see as more information develops.
It may not be the large-scale RTS that fans of the franchise have been waiting for, but it is at least a sign of life from a dormant and nearly forgotten series. It is being developed by Redwood Studios, and their General Manager, Michael Martinez, had this to say on their new game:
As huge fans of the strategy genre, we wanted to build a great RTS on mobile. Rivals embraces the spirit of the Command & Conquer franchise and reimagines gameplay to deliver our vision. Rivals is specifically designed for mobile, so we’re giving players quick, head-to head live battles with continuous unit control, where skill and strategy reign supreme.
