Today, the creators of Exploding Kittens announced that it will host its first ever Burning Cat convention on May 16-17, 2020 in Portland Oregon. In addition to hosting the event with a coliseum-esque center stage, the creators will also hold a larger-than-life size model cat which will burn at the event.
We’ve attended a lot of gaming conventions. A lot of them. There are things we like. We like the fans. We like the games. We like the creativity. But there are many things that we don’t like. We don’t like that most conventions are basically a glorified shopping mall. We don’t like that despite being a gaming convention, very few people play actual games, or have actual fun.
So, we decided to reboot the idea of a convention. We decided to build something new, from the ground up. We decided to focus on a core philosophy: this is a con you attend if you want to have actual fun. This is a place to observe and/or participate in games, comedy, and creativity. This is a place for tabletop gamers, card game players, casual party game players, families who love games, game makers, or anyone who ever hosted a game night.
In the center of our convention will be the life source of Burning Cat: THE RING. Inside this gladitorial cage, humongous, oversized games will be played. Stupid stunts will be performed. New sports will be invented. We will defy the laws of nature. We will defy the nature of laws.
For example:
- Cat-themed American Gladiator.
- Dodgeball, but the balls are massive and covered in hair
- (we call this game Hairball).
- A dunk tank full of LaCroix™ sparkling beverage.
- The world’s largest game of freeze tag.
Everyone is welcome to participate in The Ring.
Or just watch, if that’s your thing.
Towering over it all will be our Burning Cat. She is our Goddess. Our muse. Our Catleesi. She will preside over the convention like a furry Sauron. There will be a countdown timer at her feet. When the convention ends, she will erupt with the light of a thousand stars. She will implode into something terrible and wonderful. She will transform.
She will burn.
