Behind-the-Scenes with Arkham City’s Sound Team

You’ve seen the (awful) Game of the Year box art, and you’ve read about the new Harley Quinn’s Revenge DLC. Now you can go behind-the-scenes with the people behind the sound effects that made Batman: Arkham City such an immersive game. A new video showcases some of the techniques behind creating the sounds of every punch and kick, along with the background noise of the city. You can watch the team at work in the video after the break.

In Batman: Arkham City, players were drawn into the elaborate and engrossing world of the Dark Knight, and the reality of that universe depends on a talented team of foley artists and sound designers to bring it to life. In anticipation of the May 29th release of Batman: Arkham City Game of the Year Edition, this new video released by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment goes behind-the-scenes with professional insights from Game Director Sefton Hill of Rocksteady and foley artist John Roesch (The Dark Knight, The Matrix, Inception, Fight Club). Viewers get a chance to head into the studio where skilled foley artists create the sound of beating up Mister Freeze, and go out to the world famous Warner Bros. Studio to capture the sound of live gunfire in an urban environment reminiscent of the streets of Arkham City.

The behind-the-scenes video is meant to help promote the upcoming release of Batman: Arkham City Game of the Year, but even gamers like me who have already played the game will enjoy learning about the processes that went into creating it. Have a look:

Breanna has been gaming since infancy, if gnawing on an unattended controller counts as playing a game. One of the younger members of the Gaming Trend family, she dabbled in PC games as a kid but wasn't fully consumed by the hobby until the sixth generation of consoles. Now an avid PC and console gamer, she looks forward to the day when she can scape together enough cash to join the next gen club.

In the last week of middle school, a math teacher taught her how to program a calculator; she was pretty much hooked then and there. Currently working towards a degree in Computer Science and Applied Math, Breanna hope to someday make games instead of just writing about them. Other hobbies include playing guitar, binge-watching Netflix, and cooking delicious food.
