Marvel’s Wolverine isn’t a true Insomniac game

After polishing off Marvel’s Wolverine, I was left with mixed feelings about how good it actually was. As a huge PlayStation exclusive helmed by Insomniac, it looks fantastic, is cinematically epic, and the scintillating moment-to-moment action is gruesome and gratifying in a bloodlusting kind of way. On the flipside though, the gruff reminiscences and musings of Wolverine and his chemistry with Jean is stilted; the one-dimensionality of the action, and the mawkish way the game tries to make you resonate with it like trying to marry a vampire with a sun-scorched Floridian beach are forceful and unengaging. While I was playing, something didn’t sit right with me. I tried to figure it out, but it was hard to grasp, until eventually it dawned on me that this epic Wolverine adventure isn’t a true Insomniac title, but let me explain why I’ve come to this conclusion.

Insomniac has a colourful history of whimsical and zany adventure titles. Starting off with Spyro, the team created one of PS1’s most-adored franchises with its lovable purple dragon and colourful lands. They managed to leave an indelible imprint that’d make 90s kids all gillied up with nostalgia.
