TGIF: Gaming Trend’s Weekend Lineup

This weekend is arguably the biggest weekend for nerds the world over as millions of us will have our eyes glued to our screens for great geek news when San Diego Comic-Con 2014 takes place. Will Batman crossover with the Hulk in a brand new comic series? Possibly. Will Geralt from The Witcher 3 lay waste to colossal beasts in Japan’s famed Monster Hunter 4 series? It could happen. Will PlayStation show anything regarding The Last Guardian? Ok, now you’re just being ridiculous. The point is that this weekend is–along with E3–the be all end all for every one of us peasants who inhabit the land of geekdom. To celebrate this conglomeration of nerd culture the GT staff will be playing games. Here is what the GT staffers are playing:

Josh Devlin, Reporter

I just 100% completed Doki Doki Universe because it was free on PlayStation Plus and was surprised by how much that game wrapped me in its comfy blanket of cuteness. So much so that I bought the Story Planets DLC pack and will stroll and dance my way through those this weekend.

Maybe more of the Crucible in the Destiny Beta. I want to see what the teased permanent rewards will be on Saturday, but I’ll be working, so it gives me my first great reason to try out the PS4/PS Vita Remote Play.

I’m also almost finished with The Legend of Zelda on Wii U Virtual Console (only dungeons 9 & 10 left), so I’ll beat that.

Despite my reservations for the games final release, my brother-in-law, sister and I intend to spend as much of the weekend as we can putting Fallen troopers to their final rest as the PS4 Destiny Beta concludes. We may make some new characters and put them through their paces for a few hours, or see how many of our current avatar’s powers we can actually max. In either case it’s going to be a great time.

After that I will put some time aside to finish re-modding my PC games after my rig blew its motherboard last week… An admittedly bittersweet conclusion to an otherwise action-packed couple of days off.

Ron Burke, Editor in Chief

This weekend I’m going to be tackling some different things for Gaming Trend.  I’m reviewing a MyBook from Western Digital as an attached storage device for the Xbox One (though I’m using it for far more than that), I’ll have a review up for NVidia’s Shield (the one that came out last year – we’ll check out the new hotness soon), and I’m taking a look at an art book.  Throw in some time with The Crew’s beta, and some test time with Nosgoth’s beta and you have a somewhat odd gaming weekend.

I’ve also got some movie time to catch up on.  As of right now, Guardians of the Galaxy is showing 19 reviews and is sitting pretty at 100% – can’t wait for that.  Before then I need to check out Lucy, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, The Purge: Anarchy, 22 Jump Street, How to Train Your Dragon 2, and I’m gonna check out the Need for Speed movie as a rental.  That’s a whole lot of time sitting in uncomfortable movie seats!

Stefan Alexander, Staff Writer

I know it’s sad, but I’m still hooked on the Destiny Beta. Why am I leveling up a character I’m just going to have to say goodbye to when the Beta ends? Why am I collecting uncommon weapons just to watch them slip through my fingers? I don’t really know, but it’s fun. There’s also an online event going on this Saturday after 2PM PST which is supposed to grant participants some exclusive content for when the full game launches in September. Maybe I’ll see you there? Oh yeah! I also get to test drive The Crew beta for a site write up, cool, cool. Maybe it’ll help me wean off the Destiny Beta before the bitter end. I’ll probably do some Mario Karting too, just to round things off a bit.

What are you playing this weekend? Tell us in the comments section below.

On December 5, 1986, Josh was born into this world pink-faced and squalling. His only thoughts were, "WHAT IS GOING ON? WHO ARE ALL OF THESE PEOPLE? AND WHY THE HELL AM I NAKED?" 19 years later he bought an Xbox 360 and now plays and writes about video games. Life is funny that way.
