The Illumineer’s Trove returns for chapter four of Disney Lorcana. I was critical of the Trove and if it was even worth getting when the first chapter came out, but Ravensburger has added some new value in chapters three and four that is worth a relook.
Backing up a bit, what is the Trove? The Illumineer’s Trove is a storage box for cards that can house a small collection, or a piece of a larger collection depending on your card sorting/storage system. As a starting point or dump for large amounts of commons, it’s a nice design that features fun card artwork on all sides. In addition to the box, it also comes with eight booster packs at a price point that is the same as just buying the packs by themselves.
My previous criticism of the trove was that the box was too small to be useful long-term and that you might as well just buy the packs and not bother with the trove. Admittedly, I think I was a bit too harsh and overlooked the players who are not large collectors and might be perfectly content with the small box to store a few decks. When I jump into a game, I tend to jump in deep… but I digress. The Trove was fine if it fit your needs.
New additions to the Trove, since I last looked at them in chapter two, are a handy Lore counter dial that replaces the easily bumped paper token tracker that comes in the starter decks, as well as a set of small d6 dice for tracking damage on characters. The box also comes with a set of card rarity dividers to help organize your collection. Of course, the eight boosters are still present as well.
The only thing I would change is to have the included dividers be for card colors rather than rarity. Let’s be honest, you’re not going to put an enchanted card in a paper box. I could see myself storing extra commons and rares in a Trove, but legendaries and above deserve a little more protection. Maybe that’s just me.
With those three simple additions, I’d say the Trove is now the essential starting point for getting into Lorcana. Grab a starter deck and a Trove and you are ready to play without having to fiddle with the paper damage and lore tokens that come in the starter decks.
A life long video gamer, Mark caught the Tabletop itch in college and has been hooked ever since. Epic two player strategy games are his favorites but he enjoys pretty much everything on the tabletop, just no Werewolf please. When he gets a break from changing diapers and reading bedtime stories he can usually be found researching new games or day dreaming about maybe one day having time for a ttrpg. Some of Mark's favorite games are Star Wars: Rebellion, A Feast for Odin, and Nemesis.
The Illumineer’s Trove in chapter four of Disney Lorcana comes with eight boosters, a Lore counter, and a set of damage dice that make it an essential starting point for anyone new to the game.
PROS
- Dice and Lore counter add great value
- Immediately have a place to store your first cards
CONS
- Collectors will quickly outgrow it
- Color dividers would be more useful than rarity
