Blob Party is a smallbox party game from Wizkids with a very simple pitch. Players are working together to write down the same answers as other players in hopes that they join together as a “blob”. Blob Party is similar to other word guessing games, such as Just One, and if you are familiar with Just One, players have the opposite goal, wanting to come up with the same answers instead of avoiding them. If Blob Party is so simple is there any fun to it?
One of Us, One of Us
Each round of Blob Party, a player will be given a category at random and then chooses a clue from one of three cards to go with that category. Each player will write down an answer pertaining to the clues in hopes they will match with any of the other players. Each time the players’ answers match they join together to form a bigger blob. Blobs with multiple teammates compare their answers and then choose one answer for their “blob”. If all the players can join as one blob within seven rounds, everyone will win.
That’s all of the rules to Blob Party as the game is very simple. What isn’t as simple is writing down your answer. The game changes based on who is playing and how well you know everyone at the table. At first everyone is on their own and the chances of duplicate answers are higher, but as the game progresses teams form with each team trying to guess what the other teams answers will be. For Blob Party this is the fun of the game. Suddenly you’re in everyone else’s headspace trying to figure out what their answer is, not necessarily what your answer is. However, if everyone is doing that, will anyone have the same answer? In one game, there were seven people all trying to predict the sole answer from the last player not in the blob. Multiple times the “blob” chose the wrong answer from among themselves, but the correct duplicate was always somewhere within the “blob.” We found this to be particularly fun, but maybe not everyone will.
In addition to Blob Party being a fun word game, the components for Blob Party are quite charming. Blob Party has the components you’d expect such as cards, markers, and dry erase boards, but also includes a lump of dough and eight different colors of googly eyes. These last two components are entirely unnecessary but add a sense of fun as players get to stick their smaller blobs together as players succeed. Blob Party’s cute artwork rounds out the game’s charm and sense of playfulness.
All Together Now
Blob Party is a sweet and simple party game I would recommend for anyone that likes word games. Blob Party is lightweight and easy to teach to everyone. After a few plays I added Blob Party to my box of party games and I wholeheartedly recommend you do the same. While Blob Party won’t come out every time I need a party game, I’m happy to add it to my toolbox of games.

Chris, now a relapsed MtG player, loves connecting with people via gaming through RPGs, board games, and video games. A particular favorite is testing friendships through social deduction games.
