The Dragon Prince: Xadia hands-on preview – A fast-paced and hero-based action RPG adventure!

I’ve been a huge fan of The Dragon Prince on Netflix since Season One! The found family elements and interesting world-building were the draws, and the cute animation and great storytelling kept me around long-term. So when I found out The Dragon Prince had a new mobile game coming out from the makers of the actual show, I had to see what this was all about. Thankfully, I was able to preview the game and actually got to talk to the co-founders of Wonderstorm and creators of the show, Justin Santistevan and Justin Richmond, right there at the preview. It was an amazing experience, and the game is going to be a lot of fun for fans of the show.

To set expectations, the creators told me this game was more about exploring the lands of Xadia and it won’t have a ton of story aspects. The goal is to get friends together or play by yourself and see some areas of Xadia we haven’t seen as much in the show and expand on areas we have seen before.

We jumped in at level 10 and got to see some of the different missions you’ll play. It’s very easy to pick up the game and know what you’re doing quickly. I’ve played quite a few mobile games and figured it out fast. We played one normal mission in which you ran through the map beating bad guys, searching for treasure, and more. I actually found a secret on a map that not many had found during the preview. That made me excited as I’m a gamer who likes to search behind every stone, every waterfall, etc to look for new clues. We got through this mission with no sweat and had a lot of fun using the abilities to do massive damage to some pirate-type enemies.

The second map we tried was a boss fight. While we were told we didn’t have the highest gear we would have if we played naturally through it; one of the creators, Justin S, the friend I met at the preview, and myself managed to get almost to the end before our communication broke down and the boss tore us to shreds. We had a blast and everyone involved had a great time even if we lost.

The combat of The Dragon Prince: Xadia uses abilities that show up on the right side of your screen. Your main ability is always accessible with special abilities on cool-downs. You have a slightly angled top down view that makes it easy to see the field of battle even on a smaller mobile device. I never felt my fingers were in the way of the action, which tends to be my biggest gripe with some mobile games.

The slate of characters will be well known by any fan of the show including Callum, Soren, Rayla, and more! Each of them have their own abilities that make them move and feel like they do in the show. I played the entire time as my favorite character, Rayla. She’s a Moonshadow Elf assassin and the last of the Dragonguard. In game, just as she is in the show, she’s got quick movement and attacks befitting an assassin of her skills and know-how. My fellow preview-participant played as Soren, who acts more like a tank, keeping the action away from Rayla so I can come and do massive damage when the time is right.

There are also equipment and level-up mechanics to further add depth to the game. However, we didn’t get to mess around much with them during the preview, so keep an eye out for our review closer to the release date for more information on that element of the game.

This level of detail to the world and characters is another reason why having the creators of the show do the game works so well Each of the creators actually have experience in the gaming industry, so it was a goal from the beginning of Wonderstorm for them to be able to do both shows and games with the same team. That means all the characters look exactly right, their abilities are just right, and the details of the lands of Xadia are right on track with the show.

The Dragon Prince: Xadia will be out on July 30th on mobile devices and on Netflix. You’ll also be able to catch Season 6 of The Dragon Prince on Netflix on July 26th.
