Resident Evil 4 Separate Ways DLC Preview — It’s Ada’s Turn

We had the chance to see a hands-off preview snippet of the upcoming DLC content for Resident Evil 4 Remake, which released earlier this year to critical acclaim. Titled “Separate Ways”, this expansion has you in the shoes of none other than the mysterious Ada Wong. Fans have been eagerly awaiting the announcement of this beloved DLC that completed the Resident Evil 4 experience back in 2005, and now it’s finally releasing in just a few days.

Most of the preview we were shown revolved around gameplay sections, so don’t worry about any story spoilers. We, get to see some interactions between fan-favorite Luis and Ada revolving around retrieving The Amber, tasked by none other than Albert Wesker himself.

If you played the base game, then many of the environments and locales will feel familiar with you on Ada’s journey, as she’ll be traversing through the castle, quarry, and village just like Leon did. However, Ada gets her own nifty little grapple hook that lets her slingshot across ledges and even grapple onto enemies for a melee combo. She can’t use it whenever she wants though, as a scripted button prompt must appear for her to do so.

Ada’s offensive arsenal looks mostly similar to that of Leon’s, for she is equipped with all the tools he has, including grenades and multiple firearms ranging from pistols and shotguns to rifles and submachine guns. She has the ability to roundhouse kick, parry with her knife, as well as sneak up on enemies for an instant stealth kill at the cost of some knife durability. The difference is, she does it with such grace in that slick beautiful red dress of hers.

Blue medallion side quests make a welcome return in Separate Ways, tasking Ada to find hidden medallions to shoot down for an extra reward. Though a bit of a minor spoiler, we get to see Ada make it on top of a building to ring the church bell that ultimately saved Leon from the village rampage at the beginning of the base game. The preview snippet ends with a rooftop boss encounter with an El Gigante, with Ada grappling to different platforms to avoid collapsing ones smashed by the giant itself.

The Separate Ways DLC brings some refreshing gameplay changes on top of the base Resident Evil 4 game as we get to see Ada’s side of the story. Most importantly, it fills in the gaps to the narrative and lets us discover the ways Ada helps Leon throughout his mission to save the president’s daughter. After all, who doesn’t like Ada right?

Resident Evil 4 DLC Separate Ways launches on September 21, 2023 on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series S|X.
