At Gen Con this year, a few of us at GamingTrend were able to sit down with Mike Gnade from Rock Manor games to run a few rounds of the upcoming game Disco Heist Laundry. While we didn’t get a full game in, the beginning of the game was enough to get me hooked.
Conceptually, there’s two main things happening in the game. First, you act as a mobster who runs a crew to complete jobs around the board. You’ll have your crew darting around corners to avoid the cops and into buildings to complete objectives. Second, you build a hand of cards, each of which is a unique member of the team, with effects when you play them, when you activate them, and specialties that can be used to reduce or eliminate the hazards for your crew on the board when they complete objectives.
Understanding the board state is paramount. There are beat cops patrolling the streets, each with their own destination and planned movement. If they walk into you or your goons, you’ll go to the slammer. If you have a high enough wanted level, the cops will arrest you if they get close enough. Higher still, and they’ll pursue you. Besides dodging the police, you’ll need to get to the right spot to commit some light crime. Once you’ve completed an objective, you’ll need to figure out a way to turn that loot from potential points into actual points by laundering it.
Your hand of cards is going to be the best way to get resources and complete objectives. More bodies on the streets and in your hand means that it’s easier to do a job and get off scot-free. Some cards also help you convert loot into points. As you take your turn, keep an eye out for the marketplace to provide you with the next card in any engine you want to build. My favorite part was absolutely hunting for the perfect setup.
Soon enough, Disco Heist Laundry will be released. That’s good, because the first taste was free and it left me wanting more.
