We Interview: David Huynh and Cade Philips about their work on Melatonin and the new Melatonin 2xLP by iam8bit!

We recently had the ability to sit down with the game Melatonin’s Developer and Creator David Huynh and one of the composers Cade Philips after the announcement of iam8bit’s Melatonin 2xLP becoming available for pre-order. While the LP is currently already sold out (congratulations, team) keep an eye out, you never know when they might drop more.

Today, we bring you two different interviews, a video interview with Developer and Creator David Huynh where we discuss the game, the creation, the inspirations for the idea, and more. Alongside that, we have a written interview with one of the composers Cade Philips. Enjoy!

We Interview: Cade Philips

Adam Moreno: When approaching a rhythm game with the intention of making it relaxing and chill for the player, how much do you generally have to pull yourself back from getting too intense or too upbeat in any given situation?

Cade Philips: I don’t really have to hold myself back much. This is actually my natural state of being when I make music haha. I usually find that I have to push myself to go harder sometimes haha. I am just thankful we (himself and David) both have the same idea. Our vision synchronized just clicked well!

Adam Moreno: What got you into music to begin with, are there any connections between how you started and how you locked in on this project?

Cade Philips: I got into music when I was really young. I would take random euro dance and metal songs and make nightcore edits of them in like 5th grade haha. I didn’t really know what I was doing but that was my introduction to making music. I eventually got my gamecube when I was young and played a lot of super mario sunshine and animal crossing. That was kind of my main inspiration from there on out. I am very glad it translated well between David and I.

Adam Moreno: Were there any instruments or sounds you learned you had to stay away from in order to keep the vibes where they need to be for a game called Melatonin?

Cade Philips: I honestly just made every instrument from scratch that I felt matched the vibe of the song I was making. I really love the flute sound I made though so I used that alooot.

Adam Moreno: What is one memory from your time in the industry that will live with you forever as a happy memory?

Cade Philips: I have been wanting to do this for so long and this is actually my first game I’ve ever composed for so.. Funny enough, having the pleasure to work with David is going to be that memory for me haha. I will be forever grateful they gave me this unforgettable opportunity and I will carry it with my into the future.

Thank you to both of these creators and to iam8bit for their time!
