Star Wars: Outlaws “Wild Card” DLC Impressions — Slow burn, large explosions!

Recently, Star Wars: Outlaws released their first big DLC called Wild Card. During trailers, I felt we were going to be getting a story based around playing Kessel Sabacc, which was one of my favorite aspects of the main game. We had everything from a big, high stakes tournament to Lando to play against, and I was ready. While Wild Card didn’t deliver what I expected, it was a fun Star Wars story that explains a small part of what happens in-between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Let’s jump to hyperspace and discuss what worked and what didn’t during my playthrough.

You’ll get started on Wild Card by responding to a message inside the Trailblazer. In that opening, Kay is told that there’s someone who wants to meet about a job. This character ends up being one that Kay crosses earlier in the game. (Trying to remain spoiler free, so no names.) She ends up accepting the job hesitantly and makes her way outside the station to hunt for a way to get into a gambling yacht. Once you’ve made it on to the yacht, you spend the next 20-30 minutes running around trying to find the right person to blackmail to get into the High Stakes Tournament. Once you get that, THEN, you can go play Kessel Sabacc. Well.. For a little bit.

My biggest issue with this opening is I’ve spent 30 minutes to an hour doing nothing but following people, talking to random people, or causing problems for the staff of the yacht. During that time I was never invited or had an indication I could play Kessel Sabacc against anyone on the ship except the High Stakes game. All the running around and talking would be completely fine if you filled some of that time with playing the game I assumed we’d be playing in a DLC called Wild Card.

Once you get to the High Stakes game, you play… one game of Kessel Sabacc total. I got through two and a half rounds of a singular game before the plot just continues forward. Again, I was really excited to play Sabacc just a little outside the matches you have in the base game.

The plot itself is a lot of fun. You team up with Lando in order to recover an object (again, trying to remain spoiler free here). There’s some fun fight moments, great stealth moments, and plenty of climbing and swinging from one area to another. One of the best moments in Wild Card is trying to go from the bottom of a tower to the very top without being seen. The ending fight scene felt very Shadows of the Empire, those of you who played that game will understand when you get into the fight. Once you’ve finished, you can continue in the Outlaws world like it never happened, outside of some new collectibles.

You’ll get a full outfit on the gambling yacht, some outfit pieces from the Trailerblazer after the plot is over, and some goodies such as Boba Fett’s helmet you can strap to the hover bike. I’ll probably use these every once in a while, but the clothing, outside the clothes you get on the ship itself, are cosmetic only and don’t give any bonuses.

All-in-all, it was a fun story that hide inside of expectations of playing a lot more Kessel Sabacc than I did. While I enjoyed the plot as a whole, it took about 4-5 hours of playtime to get through everything. If you have the Season Pass, you can download this and enjoy the story now. If you don’t, make sure you fully know what the DLC provides to settle expectations beforehand.
