Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope was the first game I ever gave a 100 to in my work with Gaming Trend. You can see my detailed review here. I loved everything from the characters to the updated gameplay from the first game, to the music, and beyond. Now, just a few months later, the game has come out with their first DLC as part of their Season Pass: The Tower of Dooom which is a “Season Pass Exclusive.”
The concept is pretty straightforward! Madame Bwahstrella enlists the help of Mario and his friends to help find and protect Spawny (the original chaotic character from Kingdom Battle). She opens up portals in her home to allow Mario and the gang to do battles to progress to the top of the tower and help Spawny.
Depending on what level you play on, this could be a fun jaunt through new levels we’ve not played in the main game. Or… it can be one of the hardest strategy games you’ve ever played. At least, that was the case for me. I played through a few missions on the hardest difficulty before changing it to try and get through missions for this Impressions piece. Missions on hard were taking close to an hour to complete just because of the amount of enemies you face and the fact all your characters start back at level one with nothing but a few Sparks.
As you beat levels you earn coins for items, level up gems, and Sparks and Characters. I made it my mission to get as many of my characters and Sparks as possible, and I was not disappointed. As you move up in the tower, the levels get harder, but having different characters means you have multiple tactical choices.
I really loved the inclusion of some new Sparks that allow you to spawn in some of the villain characters to fight on your side. I used them a lot as damage sponges so my characters didn’t need to be healed every thirty seconds. I really loved the inclusion of Sparks for this game, and getting new ones was a fun treat for Tower of Dooom!
I still believe that Mario and Edge are go-to characters. However, there were plenty of times I simply had to switch Edge out due to the nature of the map and enemies presented. I ended up using a lot of Bowser for his abilities of area-of-effect and then Rabbid Peach due to her healing abilities. However, Tower of Dooom was also the first time I really used Rabbid Luigi and Peach. I never really used those two in the main game much just because of how powerful Edge, Mario, and Luigi become, but Tower of Dooom made me have to rethink some of my strategies.
At the end of the day, this is a lovely piece of DLC adding new maps, new ways to play, and some new Sparks! I cannot wait for DLC 2 and DLC 3!
