Marvel Dice Throne: Black Widow vs Doctor Strange expansion review ⏤ Spells and Spies

Marvel Dice Throne is a super hero version of the popular Dice Throne game by Roxley in partnership with the OP Games, featuring your favorite Marvel characters fighting it out with a twist on the classic game of Yahtzee. You can check out our full review on the core game here as well as the Captain Marvel vs Black Panther expansion here.

The Black Widow vs Doctor Strange expansion introduces the two aforementioned heroes to the game. Black Widow adds another level 4 difficulty hero (like Loki and Scarlet Witch in the core game) while the good Doctor is our first level 5. Both feature the same great components and GameTrayz as the core game. While you won’t find anything in the expansion that changes the way the game is played like you might in a traditional board game expansion, you are getting two great new characters to play with.

Black Widow requires careful planning and more than a little luck to make work. You will need to hit the right combos to seed your Time Bombs on the opponent and work through your deck to get your best tech upgrades into play in order to get the most out of her. With her increased agility, she is difficult to hit and the long term planning aspect of her kit is a lot of fun when you can pull it off.

Doctor Strange takes the long term planning play style to the max. He can look ahead at his deck, prepare spells for bonus effects and extra damage, wrap up his opponent with the Crimson Bands, and even turn back time to reroll his attack. There is a lot going on with Doctor Strange and getting your plan to unfold in the right order is critical. He earns the 5 out of 6 complexity rating and is probably best reserved for experienced players.

Epic two player strategy games are his favorites but he enjoys pretty much everything on the tabletop, just no Werewolf please. When he gets a break from changing diapers and reading bedtime stories he can usually be found researching new games or day dreaming about maybe one day having time for a ttrpg. Some of Mark's favorite games are Star Wars: Rebellion, A Feast for Odin, and Nemesis.

Review Guidelines

For gamers that like a bit more crunch and strategy rather than a superhero slugfest, this expansion gives you just that. If either of these characters interest you and you already enjoy the base game, then you will be happy picking this one up as well.
