AK Interactive Basing Bits Review

Don't have a 3D Printer? AK Interactive has a great solution in the form of Basing Bits!

I know. I'm one of the few people on the planet who doesn't have a 3D Printer. I have my reasons. Space, cost, the amount of plastic waste they produce...I just don't see a need for one in my life. However, I need basing material. Like any good hobbyist, basing materials add a lot of splendor and fun to a model. Some rocks, ferns, and a mushroom can elevate an Elf for the D&D Table, or provide the right kind of scene for an MCP model, a Storm Trooper, or what have you.

There's a lot of companies out there selling plastic bits, and AK Interactive joined in with their new Basing Bits line.

Each set contains a number of resin printed bits, and they've done a great job of getting them very close together in the package, which means you do get a lot. I was sent the Plasma Effects, Weapon Shots, Ferns, Forest Mushrooms, Forest Leaves, and Ferns. In the Mushroom pack, there are 63 pieces, which is a fantastic deal, and the quality of the pieces is top notch.

In my tests, I replaced a broken affect on my Cable model, added some foliage to Squirrel Girl, added some blaster effects to my Stormtroopers, and everything lined up and painted up perfectly.

Cleanup on these models is just like any other resin model, you'll have to use a sharp blade to handle any supports, which isn't a problem on the FX, but you'll do some cleanup on the other pieces, which isn't that big of a deal.

Paint is easy. Primer adhered to them very well, and my paint jobs, while quick, were effective. On Squirrel Girl, the addition of some tufts helps sell the appearance.

If I had to dig for something to knock about, I would say that there isn't a whole lot of variability with the pieces, but that's not really a big deal, especially when it comes to basing an army, which is where these are really going to go into.

Personally, I'm going to pick up a few more of these at Adepticon this year, namely the portal and smoke fx. What pieces strike your fancy? Shout it out in the comments below!
