Sometimes, the universe simply guides us in the direction we’re supposed to go. During Summer Game Fest, I didn’t have an appointment with Epic Game and their game Infinitesimals from developers, Cubit Studios. I was on a waitlist and, as I passed the corner on Day 2, I got the call that someone cancelled and I ran for the chance to see this game that interested me during the main Summer Game Fest presentation.

I walked into the presentation room to see they had decorated it to look like we were in grass all around with some great artwork above it showing the sky making me feel like I was also miniature. The set-dressing set the mood quickly for the tone of the game - you’re in a familiar, yet unfamiliar terrain: Earth. I sat down with James McWilliams - Founder of Cubit Studios and Game Director for Infinitesimals - and Mickaël Fourgeaud - Co-Founder of Cubit Studios and Lead Developer for Infinitesimals. James gave me a quick rundown and off we went.

You play as Captain Awkney Relinrake, an 8mm tall Captain of an alien species who comes to see what’s happening on Earth. This is where the familiar, yet unfamiliar aspect comes into play. The trees, grass, ants, and birds all look like you’d expect. Except they’re ABSOLUTELY GIANT.

This is the first game in a while that I started playing and from the first jump knew how to handle things. So much so that Mickaël mentioned how well I was doing and how quickly I picked the game up. One word – Jetpack. The movement was insanely fluid with the jetpack allowing you to move up and down on the terrain, escape danger, reload as you jetpack back; and so on and so forth. It was easy to pick up and start flying around. When asked about fall damage, James was quick to mention that while there is fall damage, it’s not going to be enough to kill you. They want you to have fun exploring the areas and trying new things.

We flew past an ant, which I was told we COULD attack, but why attack the inhabitants of Earth when they’re not attacking me? So I left it alone and kept flying. Had a jumpscare from a bird next, which we didn’t fight, but that could be a boss, who knows? We made it to a base where we were asked to extract a scientist inside.
The shooting mechanics work well and are easy to understand. Being a third-person shooter, it was right up my alley as I’ve played way too many third-person shooters such as the Mass Effect series, Battlefront 2, and more. The team had to reel me in multiple times because I was having so much fun exploring the base and trying to find different ways to move around.

After fighting our way through the base, we found the scientist and extracted him. As we did, we ended up seeing a jumpship come down and enemies surrounded us. The fight was difficult, yet not so much so that it felt unfair. I had a great time zooming around the battlefield with the jetpack moving from high to low ground and reloading as I’d jetpack backwards. After this, sadly, the demo was over and they had to tear the controller out of my hands (not really, but I did really want to keep playing).

This game will have different ways to solve situations. You’ll have different outfits, two that were mentioned will focus on stealth while the other will be for running and gunning. This will keep things fresh and lead to multiple playthroughs of missions to make sure you found everything. There was also a mention of an electrical grid inside of each base, but that was not fully implemented at the time of this preview.
While the Captain might be a bit more stiff and stoic, the surrounding cast of characters are already the life of the party making for a good one-two punch of serious and comedy.

I gave them one of my Best of Summer Game Fest Awards for 2025. From the movement, to the combat and humor, Infinitesimals is exactly the type of game I’m looking for!

Infinitesimals will be coming to Xbox Series X, Playstation 5, and the Epic Games Store in 2026.
