Warhammer's Black Library gets a new app, but it comes with a serious drawback

Games Workshop's Black Library website is closing, potentially ending an era of DRM-free ebooks.

Games Workshop has announced plans to launch a new Black Library app in March, providing Warhammer 40K and Warhammer: Age of Sigmar fans with a new all-in-one way to purchase and read digital copies of their favorite licensed books. The new app launches on March 18th and will include a built-in eReader and MP3 player. Games Workshop's intent is that the new Black Library app will be a single stop to digitally purchase and consume Black Library contents, with over 2,000 titles available at launch. Assumably, Black Library books will continue to be digitally available on other platforms such as Kindle and Audible as well.

Coinciding with the launch of the app is a planned sunset of the current Black Library website. The Black Library website is woefully out of date and has a struggling search function. However, the website allowed users to download DRM-free versions of books and audio files. Fans could use whatever eReader app they wanted to read Black Library books through the old website, and this functionality doesn't appear to be transferring over with the new website.

To entice readers to try the Black Library app when it launches, Games Workshop will provide the following titles for free in specific formats:

  • Avenging Son in English, French, or German eBook, or English audiobook
  • Mark of Faith in English, French, or German eBook, or English audiobook
  • Sanguinius: The Great Angel in English, French, or German eBook, or English audiobook
  • Dominion in English, French, or German eBook, or English audiobook
  • Ciaphas Cain: The Anthology in English eBook or audiobook
  • Darkoath in English eBook or audiobook
  • The Return of Nagash in English eBook or audiobook
  • Realmslayer: A Gotrek Gurnisson Series – the audio drama
