There’s certainly no shortage of retro-styled Metroidvanias coming out these days, but Timespinner caught our eye even in such a crowded field. Timespinner sticks close to the genre’s classic formula, with everything from its graphics and music to its gameplay recalling platformers from the ’90s. Originally released for the PS4, Vita, and PC, Timespinner is getting a release on the Xbox One and Nintendo Switch on June 4.
Timespinner is a beautifully crafted story-driven adventure, inspired by classic 90s action-platformers. Join timekeeper Lunais on her quest for revenge against the empire that killed her family, using time-bending powers to explore a vast connected world.
Timespinner got positive reviews on its launch platforms, and it’s easy to see why. On top of its throwback gameplay and aesthetic, it adds a cool time-bending mechanic, local co-op, with music by Jeff Ball, who’s worked on some excellent games from Moss to Mass Effect.
A committed indoor kid, Bryan moved from Pittsburgh to Los Angeles for a prettier landscape to ignore. They can be lured outside with promises of taco trucks and film festivals, and enjoy trawling through used book stores for works on the occult. Bryan has been gaming since the SNES era and is a sucker for good pixel art.
