Samsung announces blisteringly fast 9100 Pro SSD

There's fast, and then there's fast. Samsung announced the follow-up to their 990 pro, and you will not believe the speeds they've managed to achieve. Let's get under the hood, but first, here's a bit from Jim Kiczek, Vice President of Memory Product Marketing at Samsung Electronics America about the purpose of this new SSD.

And the tech specs?

• Supports PCIe 5.0 x 4, delivering 2x the speed of PCIe 4.0.
• Sequential read/write speeds: up to 14,800 MB/s and 13,400 MB/s, respectively.
• Random read/write speeds: up to 2,200K and 2,600K IOPS, respectively.
• Up to 49% more power-efficient than the 990 PRO, using less power than ever before.
• First in the lineup to offer an 8TB capacity—ideal for gaming, professional photo/video editing, generating AI content and more.
• All models offer a Heatsink version for an additional layer of thermal control.
• Samsung Magician Software streamlines migration, protects data, and optimizes SSD performance.

To be clear, the fastest available drive for PCI 4.0 x4 is nearly half that fast!

One of the concerns with high capacity and high speed drives is always power draw, especially when used in a laptop. Well, Samsung has that covered as well.

The 9100 PRO series also uses less power than before, thanks to an advanced 5nm controller. The 9100 PRO with Heatsink also offers an additional layer of thermal control, with less energy consumption for a cooler, longer-lasting drive. In fact, the 9100 PRO delivers up to 49% enhanced power efficiency compared to its predecessor, and packs performance into a low profile as slim as .35”.3

The drive will be available in a few configurations, so let's take a look at the side-by-side:

The 9100 PRO SSD will be available starting this March in the 1TB (MSRP: $199.99), 2TB (MSRP: $299.99) and 4TB (MSRP: $549.99) capacities. Similarly, the 9100 PRO with Heatsink will be available in capacities including 1TB (MSRP: $219.99), 2TB (MSRP: $319.99) and 4TB (MSRP: $569.99). The 8TB models will be available in the second half of 2025.
