In celebration of their 10 year anniversary, Pimax made a surprise announcement with a project they're calling "SuperOpen". SuperOpen is a new developer initiative centered around the Pimax Crystal Super platform. As the name suggests, SuperOpen is an open developer program designed for their modular 8K VR headset, providing an ecosystem for direct and open access to the SSDK, HDK, and developer platform OpenMR, cracking the Crystal Super ecosystem wide open for the community to tinker. Let's have the Pimax team explain it more clearly, as well as cover why they chose the Pimax Crystal Super as the platform behind it:
This transforms the Crystal Super from a single headset into an open, upgradeable platform that constantly grows and expands. Developers, modders, engineers, and artists can access the tools they need to build, while collaborating with peers from across the globe to share ideas, develop projects, and shape the platform’s future. Selected projects will receive official support from Pimax, including prototype units, technical guidance, and promotional opportunities.
By reducing repeated hardware investment, encouraging modular upgrades, and bringing together the power of a global creative community, SuperOpen establishes a more sustainable path for VR innovation. It ensures that the headset you purchase today can continue to evolve with the technologies and ideas of tomorrow.
Why Crystal Super
The SuperOpen initiative is built upon Crystal Super for two key reasons.
First, Crystal Super represents a major leap forward in VR technology. It addresses many long-standing industry bottlenecks—from optical compromises and GPU-intensive rendering to closed ecosystems and short hardware lifecycles. By achieving breakthroughs in clarity, efficiency, and openness, Crystal Super provides the ideal foundation for an evolving developer platform.
Second, Crystal Super was designed from the ground up as a modular headset. Its optical engine can be freely replaced, allowing future users to adopt new modules and features without purchasing an entirely new device. This flexibility ensures that every innovation emerging from the SuperOpen program can reach users more sustainably—turning Crystal Super into not just a product, but a continuously upgradable ecosystem.

Joining the program is incredibly simple. Unlike the Quest program, there are no elaborate hoops to jump through to gain access to the software, instead simply asking you to enter the code "SUPEROPEN" at checkout. This triggers an email to send you the SDK and HDK for download. In the background, you'll also be added to the Crystal Super Developer Program. What do you get for joining? I'm glad you asked!
Members of the SuperOpen program receive exclusive access to professional tools, technical documentation, and community resources:
Software Development Kits (SDKs)
- Platform SDK:
- Integrate with the Pimax platform to enhance the game experience.
- Supports DRM, user information, and upcoming features such as achievements and in-app purchases.
- Required for publishing apps on the Pimax Store (currently supporting PC VR titles).
- Includes a Native Platform SDK for developers using their own engines or C/C++ for maximum flexibility.
XR SDK:
- Ensures compatibility with Pimax XR devices.
- Pimax PC runtime supports OpenVR SDK, reducing porting workload for PC VR developers.
- Developers can use either Pimax XR SDK or OpenVR SDK to render content on Pimax devices.
PC Driver SDK:
Provides direct integration with Pimax PC drivers for advanced functionality and performance optimization.
- Hardware Development Kits (HDKs)
- The 3D model files for different parts of Pimax Crystal Super:
- Crystal Super 50 PPD lenses;
- Crystal Super Backstrap;
- Crystal Super Dream Air prescription lens frame;
- Crystal Super Engine;
- Crystal Super face mask (new);
- Crystal Super front cover;
- Crystal Super topstrap
Obviously the other benefit is that you join a group of developers who share that platform effort, giving you an opportunity to collaborate and ideate through any challenges or opportunities that come from working in this ecosystem.
These sorts of open initiatives tend to extend a product's lifespan dramatically. An army of developers is always able to wring more than you'd expect out of hardware, enabling features even the hardware manufacturer couldn't have anticipated.
