New dev diary shows the brutality of Samson: A Tyndalston Story

Seeing Samson in action, I'm reminded of quite a few games I love. When the dev mentions Sleeping Dogs as an inspiration, I'm sold. Especially with this team being former Just Cause and Mad Max developers, the vision and execution has a chance to work. Today, we got a closer look at all of this through a new dev diary, and the game is shaping up great with about a month to go until PC release. Take a look below!

Liquid Swords, the studio founded by Just Cause creator Christofer Sundberg, has released a new developer diary for their highly anticipated debut title, Samson: A Tyndalston Story, diving deep into the game's combat and vehicle systems ahead of its April 8 launch on Steam and Epic Games Store.

In the video, designer Alex Williams walks through the philosophy and mechanics powering Samson's brutal, grounded action. Unlike most modern action games, Samson features no firearms—every fight is won or lost up close, using a custom hand-to-hand combat system built for both the player and every NPC in Tyndalston.

Inspired by beloved brawlers like Sifu, Sleeping Dogs, The Warriors, and Oni, the system rewards using the environment as a weapon by throwing enemies into obstacles, grabbing improvised tools, and making every encounter feel earned.

On four wheels, the game is equally unforgiving. Every vehicle is handcrafted with real-world physics data and part-based damage. Meaning cars don't just explode on impact; they degrade piece by piece, changing how they handle in real time. Samson's personal ride, the Magnum Opus, doubles as a weapon and requires active upkeep: repairs after combat and fuel stops at gas stations scattered around the city.
