Parts of the classic Horus Heresy "Black Books" are being made available for free on Games Workshop's website. Starting today and continuing every Thursday, Games Workshop is releasing select pages from classic Horus Heresy rulebooks, each of which detail different parts of Horus Heresy lore. The first release is a 19-page PDF covering the Night Lords, one of the Traitor Legions that rebelled against the Imperium of Man during the Horus Heresy rebellion. There are no rules for the Horus Heresy rulebook, but this is a great glimpse at one of the under-represented Chaos Legions.
Warhammer 40K has mountains of lore, contained in both rulebooks and a vast collection of novels known as the Black Library. While much of the lore from various rulebooks carry over into subsequent volumes (Games Workshop cycles new editions of the games every three years or so), some gets passed over or dropped between editions. Preserving pieces of a 13-year old rulebook is certainly an interesting choice, but probably a welcome decision given that the Black Books have long been out of print.
