Chrono Odyssey overhauls combat in latest update

The team at Kakao Games are listening to your feedback for their upcoming next-gen MMORPG, Chrono Odyssey. Powered by Unreal Engine 5, it's not a stretch to say it's the best looking MMO on the horizon, but what is it? I'll do my best to sum it up:

Chrono Odyssey is dark fantasy action MMORPG featuring a vast, seamless open world with deep character customization and a time-manipulation mechanic via an artifact called a Chronotector. The Chronotector allows you to alter time while explore various eras in the past to battle comic threats that beset the world of Setera. It combines Soulslike combat with a sandbox style world, with an emphasis on player freedom. It will feature the usual trappings of MMOs including gathering, logging, mining, skinning, crafting, dungeons, dungeons, raids, and world bosses as you work together to save the world.

I'm sure I did a poor job of summing up what will inevitably be hundreds if not thousands of hours of content, but that's the broad strokes. So what's coming in the new update? I'm glad you asked!

  • Fluid Controls: Movement is now decoupled from camera direction, allowing for independent strafing and retreating. Sprinting is now instant (no startup frames).
  • Combat Impact: New "Guard Crush" system and visceral hit reactions make combat feel heavier and more strategic. You can no longer just passively block or trade damage.
  • Consumables Rework: HP potions are now a permanent, rechargeable mechanic (removing inventory clutter), while food is now dedicated strictly to long-term buffs.
  • QoL Updates: Visual improvements to weapon swapping, new aiming arcs for throwables, and clearer duel boundaries.

These are pretty significant changes! Undoubtedly they will have a pretty profound change on combat flow, and you can see these in motion at the Steam Page for the game. Ultimately now we'll see how players receive it, but this already looks like an improvement for the game.

Chrono Odyssey moved its release date from late 2025 to Q4 2026 to incorporate feedback such as this, so there's no way you can say "the devs don't listen to us" on this title! Look for more on this one as it develops ahead of its release date at the tail of this year on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
