One of the biggest changes between Brass: Lancashire and Brass: Birmingham came in the form of the Scout rule, allowing players to trade an action for a couple of wild cards. Brass: Pittsburgh retains the wild card mechanic, but this time more thematically using whiskey tokens:
Whiskey Tokens - Wild Card Mechanism: Replacing the scouting mechanism in Birmingham, whiskey tokens can be earned in various ways. You can spend a whiskey token to make any card you want to play into a wild card representing any location or industry. Players can also hold on to them to use for premium goods sell actions to add one additional star to the sell action. This gives players flexibility and strategic options when the cards they need aren't available, or when they're pursuing premium production bonuses.
Whiskey tokens can also be used for new premium goods:
Premium Goods Bonus System: Some manufactured goods and kerosene tiles provide stars depicting them as premium goods. If you flip enough stars to meet the requirements of a premium goods bonus tile during a sell action, you may claim the premium goods tile, gaining its one-time bonus and exhausting it for the rest of the game. This creates an additional layer of strategy where players can pursue premium production for enhanced rewards beyond standard market sales.
The manufacturing track gets more enticing with branching options:
Manufacturing Track Innovation: The manufactured goods track is littered with interesting and contextually useful industry tile designs, including cheap pre-flipped options that provide immediate value. When you reach level 3, you may travel further up the track in either direction, or you can fast-track through coke to reach the level 4 manufactured goods tile, creating multiple strategic pathways to advancement.
Manufactured goods serve as the economic engine of Brass: Pittsburgh, driving commerce and providing the foundation for industrial prosperity. These diverse industries represent the broad manufacturing base that supported the specialized heavy industries like steel, oil, and railroads during the Gilded Age.
