There’s occasionally a game remake that comes out of left field, and Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty popping up on the NVIDIA Shield is a great example of how it can be done right. I popped onto my Shield and captured the first 15 minutes of the game in motion, as well as a smattering if the included Snake Tales section of the game. While you load that up, let’s answer what’s new in this version:
- Hours of gameplay: Includes the full MGS2: Sons of Liberty experience, along with all of the VR Missions.
- Features a rich story featuring Solid Snake and other characters from the Metal Gear Solid saga.
- Optimized to exclusively run on SHIELD TV at 60 fps in 720p.
The game takes up a whopping 4GB of storage – amazing, given that this was released in November of 2001. Better still, it also supports English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish language options, as well as supporting a 16:9 aspect ratio.
The game is available right now on the Google Play store for $15, though currently it’s 33% off if you act fast.
What could this spell for future releases of Metal Gear games on the Shield? Could we see Twin Snakes, Snake Eater, or even a port of Metal Gear Ac!d or Metal Gear Ac!d 2? Here’s to hoping that Konami and NVIDIA manage to put together more amazing Metal Gear titles for their Android-powered setup / gameplay streaming device. As you can see, the Shield is more than capable of handling the higher quality port without a single framerate hiccup.
