I’ve been a fan of the Gunnar brand of glasses for a while now. I was introduced to them in 2016 from the Game Grumps YouTube channel, and ended up purchasing a pair for work since I was on the computer almost all day. However, at the time I didn’t use contact lenses and ended up being “six eyes,” wearing them over my glasses. Last year, I was able to try Gunnar’s prescription glasses with the Tony Stark Marvel collaboration. Now, we’ve come full circle trying out their Arbor glasses with the Muir and Humboidt Ebony Clear Pro glasses.
On top of everything else, these are eco-friendly glasses. Included with the ebony wood glasses reinforced with an internal carbon fiber layer are the eco friendly case, pouch, and carrying case. A very nice touch for their new collection.
For this, I decided to see how the non-prescription glasses worked with my contact lenses and I also recruited my partner Regan, both to test them out at their job in data analytics and while playing video games at the end of the day. We both had similar success with them finding both pairs very comfortable and they helped significantly with eye strain as both of our jobs require a lot of screens.
The Humboidt glasses are about the same size as the Tony Stark glasses I have already minus the adjustable nose pieces. The lack of nose pieces does limit some of the comfort for those who have broken their nose before like the both of us, but neither of us found them to be uncomfortable in the least; they just made us more aware of our nose shape. They feel smooth on my ears and don’t slide, which is generally why I tend to have issues with using glasses without those nose pieces.
Both pairs are also Clear Pro, meaning they have the blue light protection just like the other Gunnar products without having the yellow tint to the lenses, making them look more like “normal” glasses you would get from your local eye doctor. Clear pro Blocks 20% of blue light at 450nm while the Amber Blocks 65% of blue light at 450nm. There was still enough protection for our eyes that we had reduced eye strain and my migraines weren’t as common. However, I do see myself wearing the Amber more personally while Regan will be using the Clear Pro.
I didn’t notice much of a difference in seeing between these and my Tony Stark glasses, which was surprising given the missing yellow tint. While wearing them, I never felt my eyes drying out, which we discussed with Dr. Miki Zilnik in July of 2023 as part of Gaming Trend’s “We Interview” series (link here).
As someone who struggles with migraines quite often, I’ve found myself living in Gunnar glasses, and because I had prescription Gunnars I stopped using my contacts just so I could keep migraines to a minimum. Testing these without prescriptions has allowed me to expand my looks while still protecting myself from migraines and eye-strain in general. For ANYONE who suffers from migraines, I would HIGHLY suggest finding a pair of Gunnar Glasses that work for you. They truly do make a difference.
My partner Regan (who has 20/20 vision) found themselves feeling the difference between playing video games with them and without them. We play a lot of Baldur’s Gate 3 together and having the glasses makes it that much more enjoyable for us. On top of that, while their work computer has built in blue light protections, they saw that it helped with the lighting in their facility which is sometimes quite harsh for long periods of time.
Overall, both myself (who has terrible eyesight) and Regan (who has the closest to perfect eyesight you can get) loved our experience with the Arbor collection and plan to continue using them during work and gaming.
