Every wonder what it’s like to work at Valve? This weekend, the Valve Employee Handbook showed up on the Internet.
This book isn’t about fringe benefits or how to set up your workstation or where to find source code. Valve works in ways that might seem counterintuitive at first. This handbook is about the choices you’re going to be making and how to think about them. Mainly, it’s about how not to freak out now that you’re here.
It’s an interesting look at the unique workplace culture at a successful game development studio, one that is radically different from other places like Electronic Arts or Activision. In fact, I suspect it serves as a kind of a recruiting tool, because who wouldn’t want to work at Valve after reading a handbook like this?
