A new trailer for the upcoming Super Mario Odyssey for Nintendo Switch was revealed today during Nintendo’s E3 Spotlight.
In addition to this new gameplay trailer, Nintendo Treehouse Live showcased a small amount of the game’s areas and core mechanics. Mario has the capability to take over objects and enemies this time around, from Bullet Bills to power lines, and even a T-Rex.
In addition, the livestream also showcased the ability to purchase outfits and hats to customize Mario’s looks, such as a sombrero. These can be purchased with coins, and this time around there’s a new twist to the golden currency — each area has its own set of coins that can only be used in that area, in addition to the traditional gold coins which can be used everywhere.
Amiibo functionality was also confirmed for the title, and Nintendo showcased a few new figures during their Treehouse stream.
This will be the first entry in the core Super Mario series since 2013’s Super Mario 3D World for the Wii U. The developers expressed how excited they were to return to the standards set by previous standalone Mario titles, and said that the development drew heavily from previous games like Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine. Super Mario Odyssey will mark the plumber’s platforming debut on the Nintendo Switch on October 27th of this year.
