“Scrolls” Dispute Going to Court – Minecraft Developer versus Skyrim Publisher

Eurogamer is reporting that the intellectual animosity between Minecraft developer Mojang and TES: Skyrim publisher Bethesda is currently on track for a full-on court battle. Mojang informed the world of this turn of events with the following tweet:

“The Scrolls case is going to court! Weee! :D”

Which, really, has to be the most refreshing notice of legal action I’ve ever seen.

For those of you just tuning in to this dispute, the short version is this: Minecraft developer Markus “Notch” Persson would like to develop a new game. He chose the name “Scrolls”. Bethesda, whose flagship series is titled “The Elder Scrolls”, sees this as encroaching on their intellectual turf. With Persson apparently quite attached to the name “Scrolls”, and Bethesda very concerned that this can cause market-disturbing confusion to “The Elder Scrolls”, it’s looking more and more like this is an argument that won’t be settled without some lawyers making money.

I’ll be on the lookout for any lawyers tweeting “Weee!” as a result of this turn of events.
