In a press release this morning, NVIDIA announced that it would be initiating a voluntary recall of all 8-inch Shield tablets sold between July 2014 and July 2015. This is in response to an issue with that specific tablet model’s battery overheating, posing potential danger to users of the gaming-oriented Android tablet. No other model or tablet has been included in the recall.
The Shield tablet, first launched in July 2014, operates on an Android OS and was the follow-up to the Shield Portable, removing the controller from the screen and allowing for remote 4k output to TVs through an HDMI cable.
Users have been reporting issues for some time with the tablet overheating, with posts on the GeForce forums pointing to cracked screen edges due to heat expansion and general issues with overheating.
Nvidia will be replacing all defective products with new units, though there is no word on if they are addressing this issue with the overall product line.
