It Is Coming

Baldur's Gate

As we mentioned a couple of weeks ago, Beamdog has launched a teaser site which seems to point towards something Baldur’s Gate-related on Beamdog’s behalf.  What we know for fact at this time is fairly limited:  This is not related to the upcoming Steam release of the complete Baldur’s Gate collection.  We also know one more thing:  The teasing ends at 5 PM EDT tomorrow, as there’s a countdown on the teaser site right now.

From looking at Trent Oster’s Twitter page, we also know that (presuming that there’s no red herrings, mind you) that Beamdog met with both Atari and Wizards of the Coast during GDC.  Of course, this tells us next to nothing although with the recent release of MDK2 HD it could be anything from an Baldur’s Gate Collection HD to Baldur’s Gate for iOS to Baldur’s Gate III.

If we take a look at the website’s source code (which has changed numerous times with teasers), we also get the following:

February 28, 2012:

Shadowy Figure- Raise Dead : Infinity Engine
“For years, I clung to the memory of it. Then the memory of the memory.
And then… it returned. Better than it was before.”

“Pore over the tapestries and works of art hanging from our walls if you wish, Child of Bhaal… perhaps you will find a clue. But patience, ah… patience would reveal it all.
As the silver moon waxes and wanes, so too does life.”

February 29, 2012:

Take heart fellow adventurers, for you have curried the favor of Boo, the only miniature giant space hamster in the Realm!
I can teach you how to use your wrath.

March 6, 2012:

“She left me to die. YOU left me to die. But Shar… Shar wanted me to live.”
“If you wish me dead, brother, it must be by your hand. No one else.”

March 14, 2012:

It is coming.

Combining all of this with the fact that Beamdog met at GDC with Atari (Great meeting with #Atari at #GDC now we need to get all the ducks in a row for an announcement #baldursgate #bestthingever) and Wizards of the Coast (Forgot to mention awesome meeting yesterday with the#WizardsoftheCoast guys. Great talking #d&d with them) it really raises the speculation-meter to fever pitch.  While we cannot say anything conclusively (because we honestly don’t know), my gut instinct leads me towards a Baldur’s Gate HD revival (which, if it can be combined with mods, would be extra-special) or a true sequel.  While an iOS revival of Baldur’s Gate (especially with the new iPad coming out) would be incredibly sweet, it seems less likely at this point.

We’ll know tomorrow, though, that’s for sure.
