Inexplicable Dinosaurs! Transformers: Fall of Cybertron Hands On Details + Trailer

Hey, Transformers fan! Look over here!

Did the above catch your attention? Then you, my friend, are a Transformers fan – and I’ve got some information you’re really going to be interested in. With E3 upon us and the announcements made formal, I’m finally able to talk about the hands-on experience I’ve had with Transformers: Fall of Cybertron, thanks to the fine folks at Activision and High Moon Studios. If the prospect of smashing up and fighting alongside Autobots and Decepticons appeals to you – and particularly if you’re into the world of Transformers itself – then click on to read more, because I have information you’ve really got to read.

I could go on about the gameplay – really, it felt extremely solid when I played it – but I only played for a few minutes at most, and of course only for pre-selected levels. It was nice to have a smooth and tweaked experience, granted, but whether this game really delivers in terms of gameplay is something for a full-on review experience to pass judgment on. Likewise, the promises of being able to play a wide variety of Transformers is enticing (they even promised to explain what Grimlock, the Transformer who stomps around as a T-Rex, is even doing on Cybertron), but hey – promises are promises. We’ll have to wait for that to be delivered. What I can talk about is feel, environment, and personality.

And holy hell, does this game have it.

That’s what impressed me most about this game: the sheer feel of the environment, the way the characters came across when I both played as and interacted with them. It’s the little things and the big things: the fact that they really seemed to nail Grimlock’s voice and personality in addition to making him fun to play. The way combat rages on around you as you play the stages of the game is intense – after all, this is supposed to take place during pitched combat in one of the most world-shaking events in Transformers history, and High Moon Studios really managed to sell me on the action and activity and sheer immersion of the world they’re breathing life into.[singlepic id=7106 w=320 h=240 float=right]

It’s that last part that’s the real challenge. Transformers have a history (well, multiple histories) to stay faithful to, and fans have a certain perception of the personalities and presence each of their favorite Autobots and Decepticons are supposed to have. The developers here really seem to be trying their hardest to not only make a game that stays faithful to that lore and makes it exciting to take part in, but also to make every Autobot or Decepticon whose role you take on feel like fun to play. They really feel like they’re going to achieve that with the way they’re going here.[singlepic id=7105 w=320 h=240 float=left]

That sums it up best. Are you a Transformers fan? Then watch this one, because what I saw is a title being crafted with a love of the lore and attention to the fans in mind. And I look forward to hearing why in the world they’ve got a T-Rex stomping around on Cybertron.

And for those of you who like to see this stuff in action rather than just read about it, I give you the latest video – straight from Activision-Blizzard. Behold, Metroplex!
