Publisher Square Enix and developer Eidos-Montreal have recently solved a video-game-age-old mystery; a conundrum that has plagued the minds of gamers and the anal-retentive since 2000: how to pronounce Deus Ex.
In a comical promotional video for Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, Square Enix and Eidos-Montréal interview people walking the streets of London, asking them how to pronounce the not-so-English game title (my personal favorite results being Dayo Sex and Do Eks). After publicly embarrassing several English-speaking persons, the video goes on to explore the title’s origins in Greek theater and its uses in modern-day literature. Check out the full video above.
The Oxford Dictionary of English lists the pronunciation of deus ex machina as dāəs ˌeks ˈmäkənə.
Deus Ex: Mankind Divided comes to PS4, Xbox One, and Steam on August 23. For more on the onerously named franchise, check out our review of Deus Ex: Human Revolution Director’s Cut.
