Personally, I thought it was horrible news to learn last month that Frogster (which has merged with Gameforge) was ending European support for Mythos while the US version was still in closed beta. Apparently, it’s worse than I had feared. Gamasutra is announcing that Gameforge is laying off 100 employees, and flat-out cancelling Mythos and Hellbreed, and possibly Star Trek: Infinite Space if a co-publisher can’t be found.
Alexander Roesner, CEO at Gameforge, explained, “Through a more efficient organizational structure, we can optimize our use of resources and great potential for further growth increase. This will strengthen our long term position in the dynamic market for online games.”
What’s interesting about this is the fact that the US version of Mythos is actually run by Redbana and T3 Entertainment, the same folks that brought back Hellgate from the dead earlier this year. Of course, given that Mythos was supposed to release in the US over six months ago, it’s anyone’s guess if Mythos will see the light of day before the rumored Torchlight MMO.
