Dust 514 Getting Deep Vita Cross-Functionality, Closed Beta Signups

A whole lot of news just rolled from EVE-Online creator CCP regarding their upcoming free-to-play massively-multiplayer shooter, Dust 514. This is a game a lot of people have their eyes on, since it bases itself in the niche but still intensely popular (and frankly, very unique) EVE-Online world, and is shaping up to me one of the more exciting entries into the shooter market. If you’re at all following this game, then click your way in here for details about the beta signup, the Vita integration, and even a snazzy video.

First up, the Vita functionality. Straight from the PR, here’s the money shot. (Is that at all appropriate lingo? No idea, but I’m going with it.)

DUST 514 also supports the PlayStation Vita in the form of a companion app. Officially titled DUST 514: Neocom, the app integrates services that incorporate the feel and functionality from DUST 514 on PlayStation 3, with a focus on customization, communication and trade. Each character can be customized and configured using DUST 514: Neocom; players can create and edit customized fittings (load-outs) with a huge variety of dropsuits, weapons, equipment, modules and vehicles. The Vita app will also access a wide range of social features, such as the in-game Mail system and Friends List to keep up with game dynamics, and players can purchase new items, weapons and vehicles from the DUST 514 Marketplace using either ISK (in-game earned currency) or Aurum (purchased currency).

Now that’s the sort of integration I always love seeing: being able to check my in-game mail, friends list, and even do a little market activity without having to be at my computer. On the downside, I’ll be honest: I really would rather see this sort of thing on an Android or iOS device, because even though I’ve got a Vita, I’m far more likely to be carrying around my phone. Come to think of it, I only use my handheld gaming devices when I’m at home – I only have space in my pocket for my iPhone. Regardless, for you Vita owners, that’s some promising news.

For you guys wanting to get in on the beta action,  just hit this link and sign up. Also sign up ASAP, because I’m hearing that the first 10k signups get preferred access to the closed beta that’s starting up soon – you’ll be right behind me, because I already signed up. Really, this one looks exciting – if they can capture a fraction of the energy and immersion EVE-Online has and put it in shooter/action form, I’m prepared to become an addict.

And finally, here’s the promised video showing some in-game footage – keep an eye out for the end where they really drive home the connection to the EVE-Online world in a glorious way.
