Dust 514 and The Way of The Mercenary

CCP Games released today a new trailer that take an in-depth look at their upcoming game, Dust 514. Set in the Eve Online universe, Dust 514 is a free to play FPS being released exclusively for the Playstation 3. Unlike its space-centric counterpart, Dust 514 will take place exclusively on the planets of the Eve universe and the battles that are waged on them. The two games will be directly connected, and players on the ground in Dust 514 may call for an orbital strike that pilots in Eve Online can deliver if they are nearby.

DUST 514 brings intense infantry combat, large-scale warfare and deep character advancement to the PlayStation 3 in an exclusive free-to-play massively multiplayer shooter. Set in, and integrated with, the massive universe of Eve Online, players wage war in this next generation of first-person shooter, where a single victory could prove the crushing blow to a galactic empire and thousands of online gamers. In DUST 514, it’s one universe, one war. Prepare to dominate both.

In Dust 514, players take on the roles of mercenaries fighting for profit and dominance with a vast array of weaponry, vehicles, and other suitably devastating sci-fi tech. Instead of merely respawning after death like so many other shooters, Dust 514 takes a unique approach to the death of a player avatar. All mercs are implanted with a “consciousness transfer device” so that on death, their personality and memories are returned to the nearest friendly base where a line of clones are ready for them to enter. All purchased weapons and equipment are lost on the field, so even though your character may have achieved immortality, you will still need to replace your equipment every time you lose it.

Dust 514’s release date is, as of this writing, unknown. If you’re not already flying around in Eve, or find yourself interested, or just have an incredible love of sci-fi shooters ( like me!), then take a look at the trailer below.
