Destiny Makes $500 Million in 24 Hours

While there are conflicting reports about whether or not the launch of Destiny did in fact cost Activision and Bungie $500 million, it doesn’t look like it matters anymore, because the game has already shipped that much product within 24 hours of its release.

This makes Destiny the most successful new IP launch in industry history.

“Based on extraordinary audience demand, retail and first party orders worldwide have exceeded $500 million for Destiny,” said Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick. “This industry milestone marks another blockbuster success for our company and demonstrates our unique ability to create some of the most successful entertainment franchises in the world. The success of Destiny, along with the recent introduction of Blizzard Entertainment’s Hearthstone, is further validation of our unique capabilities to create great entertainment franchises from the ground up.”

Earlier this year, Actvision confirmed that Destiny was going to break industry costs in development and marketing, while Bungie later claimed otherwise. But either way, Destiny appears to be an incredible success.

We’re currently hard at work on our Destiny review, but for some pre-release impressions of the game, check out our thoughts on the game’s beta.
