Promised Wii U update is live, increases speed, fixes overscan issues, adds Virtual Console

Well, it’s finally here. The Wii U update that Nintendo promised in their last Direct video is live, increasing the overall speed and stability of many of the Wii U’s features and functions. It also fixes the rather annoying problem I had with the system when it first launched — some apps, like the Miiverse and store let me fix the screen size, while the rest of the system would just scan past the borders of my TV. Date of unveiling confirmed by Microsoft for next generation Xbox

At long last, Microsoft has pinned down the official reveal date for the next iteration of the Xbox console, which will take place on May 21st on their campus in Redmond, WA. The announcement will precede a bevy of further details, which the company has promised to disclose at the legendary E3 games conference in June. As yet, very few details have emerged about the upcoming system – no one even knows what it will be called yet, although “Xbox 720″ has been the most popular (and logical) guess so far.

Good Guy Razer will honor unauthorized discount code in UK.

Min-Liang Tan, the CEO and co-founder of Razer, released a statement today detailing the release of an unauthorized discount code in the UK. The code, which gave the user a staggering 90% discount on any item purchased on Razers UK store, was apparently generated to test the company’s shopping cart software. After it escaped Razer’s control–no details on how that happened–the code went viral and was used thousands of times.

[RUMOR] Next Xbox “always on, always connected”, runs games from hard drive

New Durango leaks seem to lend credibility to previous rumors about the next Xbox console blocking used games and requiring an internet connection to play games. VGleaks has posted screenshots from Durango’s development kit, revealing that the console will feature a hard drive with room enough to “hold a large number of games”. Why so much space? Apparently, installing games to the hard drive will be mandatory and playing from the disc “will not be supported”. This may be part of a move to block pre-owned games, as has been expected of the next Xbox.

The Pikachu 3DS XL Volt Tackles Its Way to North America

The Pikachu 3DS XL will release on march 24th. This 3DS XL comes packaged with a 4GB SD card, and features two screens that are 90% larger than those found on the vanilla 3DS, and an outline of the Pokemon franchise’s mascot: Pikachu on the outside cover. This new 3DS XL releases the same day as Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity. Nintendo is offering gamers who purchases both the 3DS and the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon title an extra bonus:

Ouya won’t support friends lists, online chat, or achievements at launch

Online functionality has been a staple of gaming for much of recent history. You might not always want to play with others, but you can count on there being a trusty friends list there for when you do. That is, of course, unless you’re playing an Ouya game at launch. A report today from The Verge reveals that the Ouya won’t support online chat, friends list, or achievements at launch. Despite earlier reports that the open-source Kickstarter console also wouldn’t support online multiplayer at launch, a representative confirms that Ouya “will definitely be supporting online multiplayer — developers just need to build in the functionality.”

The gaming world is abuzz with news from last night’s big PS4 announcement. While most of the focus is being placed on what Sony revealed about their next-gen console, there were a couple big things that they didn’t detail at all; the actual console itself, and whether it would feature the kind of anti-used game technology that’s been the subject of console gamers’ speculation and fear. Well, we might not get a look at the PS4 itself until E3 but at least we can resolve that second issue. The head of Sony Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida has told Eurogamer that the PlayStation 4 will not block used games.

February 20th is finally here, and the day of reckoning has come. Sony is (almost certainly) set to unveil its new console to the public in an exclusive event starting at 6pm EST/3 PST. Razer gives us a second chance at StarCraft II peripherials

If you are a StarCraft II fan but missed the chance to pick up the branded peripherals that Razer released, you’ve got another shot at it – they are re-releasing the peripheral pack for the title. This means you can pick up the Razer Spectre (the StarCraft II mouse), the Razer Marauder (the StarCraft II keyboard), and the Razer Banshee (the headset). Having seen them in action in FAR more capable hands than I, it gives a cool visual clue to the APM (actions-per-minute) of the player. Beyond that, they look pretty sweet, seemed sturdy, and having put the headset on my head I can say quite comfortable. Here’s a little bit more about them:

A new Ouya to launch every year

By now you probably know that the Ouya, which was a massive Kickstarter success, has an official launch date set for later this year. But although it will be the first launch for the open source Android-based console, CEO Julie Uhrman insisted in an interview with Joystiq at DICE this week that it won’t be the last.
