Join us here as we liveblog the event for you so we can all laugh, cry, and be amazed (hopefully) with the one of the new boxes we’ll likely be playing games on for years to come.
Konami is ready for E3, and they are looking to involve the public in the fun. This year around they’ll be giving us coverage on CBS TV stations nationwide! What will they be showing? A brand new trailer for Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2, an exclusive look at the next Pro Evolution Soccer title, a peek at Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, and other major announcements. The sweet part is that all of this will hit just prior to E3, so we’ll nab em and make sure you get to see them right here at Gaming Trend. It’ll also be on Gamespot and Xbox Live, but hey…the awesome happens here.

You legions of Warcraft, Starcraft and Diablo fans, take note! Blizzcon tickets are now on sale. As always, it’s best to act fast if you want to attend this convention, as these have of habit of selling out rapidly. A second batch will be sold on April 27th at 10am PDT, with 500$ dollar charity dinner tickets going up for grabs May 1st at 7pm PDT. The standard tickets cost 175$, but I’ve always heard from people who’ve hit this con that there’s a whole lot of fun to be had – along with some game incentives, of course.

The latest project for the producer at Crytek, a free-to-play browser-based shooter titled Warface, has been in open beta on Russian servers for several months now, and he claims that having such a large beta test has been incredibly helpful. While the game was originally slated for release only in South Korea, the team at Crytek realized they could justify a wider release. “We thought, ‘why should we bother limiting ourselves to Asia for this game and why shouldn’t we make it a global product?’”

As a producer at Adhesive Games, he’d spent most of the past week talking with fans, press, and other developers. I offered to pause so he could get some soothing tea, but he decided to soldier on, laying out both the history and future of his team’s free-to-play mech shooter Hawken.

During the course of the talk two things quickly became apparent. First: the developers really know and love the DC Comics universe, and second: they really like watching the DC characters destroy everything around them.

Participating in the discussion along with Capps were Ian Bogost, a professor at Georgia Tech, and Daniel Greenberg, an RPG designer and game scripter, with numerous projects including work for The Walt Disney Company.

Our coverage continues with a bit of a surprise. The talk had the innocent-sounding title “Free Indie Games: Curating the DIY Revolution,” and we went to the talk expecting to hear about how the website freeindiegam.es operates. What we got instead was twenty-five minute screed against mainstream games, mainstream game publishing, Apple and capitalism.

Why is it surprising? Because the developers used almost no overtime, and managed to keep their non-work lives intact instead of demanding long work hours from the development team.

Diablo 3 on the PC was wildly successful and sold a boat load of copies, but it was also wildly hated on for having server-related technical issues during its launch week, for requiring a network connection at all times, and for the real money Auction House which ushered a legitimate pay-to-win model into the game. Ironically enough, due to hardware limitations, the console version will not have any of that.

Undoubtedly for GDC fun, the folks at Ubisoft have released a new trailer to show of the rapidly-approaching Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Blacklist. This trailer is a walkthru of a level called “Abandoned Mill” with commentary showing us some of the new tricks Sam has up his sleeves for all play styles (Panther, Ghost, and Assault) this time around. If you’ve not been keeping up with the title, here is a nibble on the backstory:
