Backing something on Kickstarter can be a risky proposition. You never know what will come out from it, as our first impressions of Star Command have shown. However, the idea of combining a MMORPG and a TCG must be very popular. Cryptozoic has announced that their Kickstarter for HEX: Shards of Fate is fully-funded after five days.

While Magic is a great game to play in person, the recent electronic implementations of the game have made virtual card throwing as close to the real thing as possible. Every year Wizards of the Coast brings an update to the Duels of the Planeswalkers, and this year is no different. The new features coming this year should be exciting to those who play competitively: Slivers and sealed deck play.

The first Playdek game I played on the iOS was Ascension. I don’t know how many games I’ve played, but it plays fast and the expansions add even more cards and new rules that enhance the experience. Now Playdek and Stone Blade have announced that they plan to support Ascension on the iOS for at least the next year.

You might know that a little thing called PAX East is going on this weekend. Well, in honor of the happening, Playdek has put the iOS version of Penny Arcade Gamers vs. Evil on sale for $.99. If you don’t know PAGvE is, it’s a deck building game. It is rather a simple one, but the Playdek implementation works very well. If you wanted to check it out but were afraid of pulling the trigger, now is the time to do it. Head on out to the App Store for more details.

Kickstarter has become a phenomenon with video game developers, but it has become even bigger with board game developers. I asked Michael Mendes, founder of Tasty Minstrel Games, about his Kickstarter experiences and his newest endeavor Dungeon Roll.

If you have played Ascension on the iOS, you know what a great experience it is. It plays very quickly, and doesn’t cost much for the expansion. However, Android users have never gotten a chance to experience the game. That doesn’t mean that Stone Blade Entertainment hasn’t been thinking about them. They recently announced a new Kickstarter campaign to help get an in-house development team for this very reason.

Magic is one of the few Collectible Card Games that has actually been able to survive long term. Many have come and gone due to cost, licensing issues, or a bad theme. They also released Duels of the Planeswalkers on the PC, XBLA, and PSN. Now they will be coming out with a new version this summer, and it will make its debut on the iPad.

If you have an iOS device, then you probably know that some great board and card game translations have come to the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. Playdek has brought Ascension and Food Fight to the iOS already, and they have just released a couple of screenshots for the upcoming build of Nightfall.

Interested in games of a decidedly non-electronic nature? Interested in prying those DS’s and game controllers out of your kids hands to play some games around the table instead of in front of a screen, but concerned about convoluted rulesets and extended time sinks? Indie game creators Fireside Games feels your pain, and their latest creation- Bloodsuckers- continues their pledge to creating fun, accesible games that the entire family can play that they started with Castle Panic. A few weeks ago we got to check out a demo of Bloodsuckers, with Fireside co-owner Anne-Marie De Witt guiding us through the basic mechanics of the game. Check it out:
