Report: Component supplier expects Nintendo NX to ship 10-12 million units in its first year

Though production of Nintendo’s new platform, the Nintendo NX, isn’t expected to begin until the end of the first quarter of 2016, a recent Digitimes report claims that the console’s component supplier is projecting the console to ship between 10-12 million units during its first year on the market.

According to the report, Nintendo plans to sell far beyond these numbers, expecting to ship 20 million units in 2016, as reported by Digitimes in July. But the company’s upstream component supplier expects shipments to only reach around 10-12 million.

Though there is a bit of a dissonance between those two numbers, GamesIndustry.biz points out that even if Nintendo’s new console ships the lower of the two projected numbers, the NX will still either meet, or exceed, the Wii U’s lifetime sales, which as of September had shipped slightly under 11 million units.

The manufacturing of the Nintendo NX is reported to be headed by Foxconn Electronics, though no confirmation has been given as to the validity of this news.
