Metroid: Samus Returns overview trailer

A new trailer has been released giving more details on the upcoming Metroid: Samus Returns. Three previously features previously unseen in the game have been shown.

The new Aeion ability Phase Drift allows Samus to slow down time, making it easier for her to outmaneuver fast-approaching hazards and obstacles. Though not mentioned in the trailer’s narration, the purple Gravity Suit was also shown in gameplay footage. This is a recurring upgrade throughout the series that enables Samus to move through water with the same level of agility she has on land. The trailer also shows a Power Bomb without describing it. Power Bombs deal a lot of damage over a large area and can break some objects that no other weapon can.

The trailer also reiterates some previously shown features of the game. Aeion abilities Scan Pulse, Lightning Armor, and Beam Burst are shown, along with some series staples such as the Morph Ball, Ice Beam, Grapple Beam, and Space Jump. Amiibo functionality is also explained—the squishy Metroid amiibo will point out the nearest Metroid on your map, while the rest unlock reserve tanks that replenish Samus’s resources when they run out.

A remake of 1991’s Metroid II: Return of Samus, Metroid: Samus Returns for Nintendo 3DS arrives on September 15.

Kyle is an unashamed longtime Nintendo fanboy. Some of his earliest and fondest memories are of playing Super Mario Bros. 3 on the NES with his grandmother. His favorite series are Fire Emblem and Metroid. Outside of gaming, Kyle is also a serious Whovian, favoring the Seventh Doctor and Ace as his preferred Doctor and companion. He also loves superhero movies, power metal music, and basically anything in the space fantasy genre. Avatar by Smashley (@SmashleyDraws on Twitter).
