After announcing in April that Demon’s Souls would go offline on May 31st, Atlus has apparently reversed course. They stated today that the popular PS3 exclusive title will stay online for a while longer. The decision appears to have been made thanks to a combination of community feedback and the financial success of other titles covering the costs of keeping the servers alive. Tim Pivnicny of Atlus had this to say about the change:
“We’re incredibly excited to be able to announce that the Demon’s Souls online experience will persist for a while longer,” stated Tim Pivnicny, Vice President of Marketing and Sales. “While it originally seemed as though it would be unfeasible for us to continue to sustain the servers, a number of developments have made it possible for us to continue to invest in and support our fans as they have continued to invest in and support us and Demon’s Souls. For all the gamers who have yet to discover the game’s amazing online experience, we’re happy to say you can still log on and find out why Demon’s Souls is still regarded by many as one of the finest games of all time.”
A new cut-off date was not announced, so it seems that the servers will stay on for the forseeable future. Atlus did not rule out future extensions of the servers if player interest and online activity stays consistent.
