Activision Confirms New Black Ops Map Pack, Double XP Weekend

Activision has just sent over confirmation that the next downloadable map pack for Call of Duty: Black Ops will be released for the XBox 360 on June 28, 2011.  Much like its two predecessors, the “Annihilation” pack will include four new competitive multiplayer maps and one new cooperative map for players to hone their zombie-shooting skills.

“With Annihilation, Black Ops fans will get four exciting and unique multiplayer settings with Hangar 18, Drive-In, Silo and Hazard,” said Treyarch Studio Head, Mark Lamia.  “Players will also enjoy an all-new Zombies experience, Shangri-La, an exotic and mysterious map filled with deadly traps, dark secrets and innovative gameplay that will challenge even the most daring Zombie hunters.”

As part of the Annihilation rollout, Black Ops developer Treyarch has announced that online players will earn twice as many experience points during the launch weekend, beginning Friday, July 1st.  Experience gains are used to unlock new weapons and abilities, aesthetic customizations, and rewards for earning killstreaks.

Release dates for the PS3 version of the Annihilation DLC have not yet been announced, but the two previous map packs arrived about one month after their initial launch on the 360.  The PC releases were more varied, with First Strike lagging two months behind the 360 version, and Escalation showing up after only three weeks.

Coincidentally, Target is running a sale this week where buying a new copy of Call of Duty: Black Ops for the 360 or PS3 includes a free copy of Modern Warfare 2.  Full details can be found on their website until the sale ends June 18th.
