you can transfer HL2 to another person as long as you're willing to give them access to your Steam account as well.  for that reason, it's best to use a random name for your Steam account rather than something personal, and be sure to keep that account strictly for HL2 if you intend to give it away later.  if you have registered any games other than HL2 on the same account, you would be giving up access to them as well.

does that make any sense?  i think someone around here did sell/trade their copy of HL2, so maybe they could fill us all in on how it went...

I believe you can pay Valve $10 and they will transfer your CD-key to someone else.
