You'd actually be better off with the PS1 version as well. The PC ports of FF7 & 8 were pretty awful. They made all the character models hi-res, but didn't re-render any of the static backgrounds. So if you run anything higher than 640 X 480, you have these great looking characters running around in front of blurry, pixellated landscapes. Not good. The music was also...just...off somehow. I don't know if it's because of the hardware of the PS1 ran it differently, but the PC versions just didn't sound nearly as good. Which is a shame considering FF8 is one of Uematsu's best scores (imho).
Agreed with Gratch. During the psx/n64 time, I was a diehard Nintendo fanboy. I made myself NEVER consider a Playstation, even though Squaresoft was my absolute favorite company of all time. So I had to resort to buy FFVII and FFVIII for the PC. Yep, it was pretty sloppy, the graphics were a TINY bit better, the sound is just pretty horrific for both versions. Good thing I got over that Playstation bias when the PS2 came out
