The Last Remnant is on sale at Gamersgate.com for $3.75 for the next 16 hours.  I thought what the hell and picked it up since I missed out on GMG's $3 sale.  I know that the reception of this game was not great initially. Has it improved at all or are most of its faults too big to fix? Registers on Steam.

TLR had the potential to be an incredible game.  The combat was unique (controlling armies instead of individual units), it looked and sounded amazing, and the story was very well done.  Problem was, most of the game mechanics were utterly baffling and they provided very little explanation.  Even after literally hours of research on FAQs, I still never figured out how in the hell the leveling system worked.  There was also a random element to combat (you issue some general instructions to your armies, then the AI does what it thinks is best) that could be absolutely aggravating, especially when they would do exactly the opposite of what you were expecting.  I got about 18 hours in before hitting a battle that made me realize I had completely gimped my characters and it would have taken hours of grinding to beat it.  Gave up at that point.

Lots of impressions and good info here.  I'd give it a tentative recommendation, hoping that you would have better luck understanding it than I did.

Yeah, I picked this up through Steam the last time Gratch recommended it, but I haven't had an opportunity to try it yet.

His link also lead me to look up the GameTrailers review, which in turn lead me to discover that they now host "Hey Ash, Whatcha Playin'?"  Fans of perfunctory, deadpan hipster humor must be so pleased.

Remind me again why we can't have a weekly video cast by someone who is at least glancingly familiar with the game at hand?  "Hey Gratch, Whatcha Playin'?" would be *so* much better!

I lasted 30 seconds into that ridiculous "Hey Ash" segment before shutting it down.  Christ, those people were annoying.

That would mean I'd actually have to concentrate on one game for more than 20 minutes.  Way too much gamer ADD going on in my head for that to happen.   icon_razz
