once the next gen cards come out $300 will be about average for that card. it is the cheap version of it. the ultra version still costs about $120 more than this. i think my 9800 holds up good enough. all i'm playing is WoW and i don't have anything on my pc game radar for another few months at least.

No, this is not the cheap version of the 6800 class of cards. It's one step below the ultra (and a small step at that), and is far more powerful than the lower class 6800's, the vanilla 6800, and the 6800 LE.

The GT is basically an underclocked Ultra, and is the best bang for the buck, IMO.  They go for around $400 normally, and that's why this deal is so good.

actually, i play almost all games at 1600x1200. minimal to no slowdown. there have only been a handful of games lately that i cant do that one.

Um, I'm going to agree with Jeff here.. The GT is the best Bang for the Buck on the market regarding the newer high-end video cards.

I'm glad you like your 9800, they're excellent video cards, and great for the money. But they simply don't compete with a 6800 GT from a framerate standpoint, nor will they have the longevity of the 6800GT in the coming year.

Again, the 9800 is a great card. It's just no 6800GT.

I have a GT, and it works beautifully in all resolutions with AA and AF turned on and in most cases, cranked all the way or almost all the way up.

If there's anybody with the $300 for this thing, go for it. I paid $400 for mine when they were brand new and I've had nothing but great experiences with it.

I agree the 9800 is a great card, hell that's what I just had for the past 15 months. No way can it "run most games at 1600x1200 with no slowdown" though, unless by "most games" one means games that are 3-5 years old.

On the other hand, I've found people have wildly differing definitions of what is an acceptable framerate. If one wants to compare the two cards, just go to Tom's Hardware and look up the Oct 4th vid card showdown report, and you'll see the GT generally gets double the framerate of a 9800 Pro.  I've got a decent rig, 2.8 ghz P4, 1 GB of pc3200, and had a 9800. There weren't many games from the last two years that I could run acceptably in 1280x1024, much less 1600. Turn on AA and AF, and forgetaboutit .. 1024 max.

Anyhoo, I didn't really mean for this to be an argument as to whether the 9800 is just as good as a GT, just to point out this deal for a GT at 20% off the current going price.

I went from a 9800 non-pro to a vanilla (non-GT) and the increase in speed was impressive.  Given that a GT is a bigger jump over the regular 6800 than the 9800 pro is over the regular 9800, I wouldn't be at all surprised by a doubling in performance going from a 9800 pro to a 6800 GT.

A 9800 is still very functional if you don't turn on AA or AF, but I won't put up with that anymore.

I went from a 9800pro 128 card to a 6800gt 256mb card, and WOW. HUGE improvement.
